The "gremlins" help kids to understand air pollution, where it comes from, what the health effects are and how pollutants are controlled.

In 1985, after getting approval from the Texas folks, Kentucky Division for Air Quality developed a supplement to the textbook, air quality education packet, for grades K-12. Included in this packet were the criteria air pollutant gremlins, activity sheets, games, puzzles and various other teaching aids. Since 1985, these Clean Air for Kentucky air quality education packets have been widely distributed across the commonwealth to teachers/educators, helping them teach the very technical, complex subject of air pollution.
Through the years this education packet has grown into a Clean Air for Kentucky air quality resource guide. Additional gremlins for asbestos and air toxics have been developed here in the division and added to the book. The book is updated periodically by a division workgroup, made up of representatives from each branch of the division. Changes are made and items added or deleted based on the concerns or issues as they occur.
The gremlins are used on brochures, fact sheets and on the division's educational exhibit for state and county fairs, science fairs, annual Earth Day events, class presentations and other conferences, festivals, workshops and various other events throughout the year. Thousands of Kentucky's citizens see and receive these items each year.
The gremlins help get the attention of students and people of all ages and make them aware of the importance of Clean Air for Kentucky and how they can "Do Their Share for Clean Air."
